TBILISI - Russian and Abkhaz armed forces units will allow residents of Abkhazia's Gali district to cross the border to receive emergency medical assistance in Georgia's Zugdidi district, Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili told journalists on Tuesday.

"Russia and Abkhazia have assured us that they will not stop residents of the Gali district who need to cross the administrative border to receive emergency medical treatment in the Zugdidi district," Utiashvili said.

This decision was taken at a meeting of officials representing the UN, Russia, Georgia and Abkhazia, which are members of a working group for prevention and response measures, the ministry spokesman said.

During the meeting, Russia also announced the withdrawal of its additional armed forces units from the area of military exercises, which started in the Gali district in late October, he said.
