Republic of Abkhazia

Key Sectors

Tourism is the most important of Abkhazia's industries. The country boasts spectacular beaches, wooded mountains, countless historical sites and a rich cultural legacy. More than a million tourists -- most of them from Russia -- visit Abkhazia each year. Visa-free entry is available for Russian passport holders, and visas are readily available to citizens of the European Union.

Abkhazia produces an abundance of agricultural products, including tea, tobacco, wine and fruits. Baked goods, tangerines, wine, vodka, beer and confectionery are some of the country's most important products.

The Inguri hydroelectric power station supplies the nation's energy needs. Abkhazia has a strong infrastructure for sea, rail, motor and air transport. Sukhum's 24-hour airport is among the most technically advanced in the region and domestic air service is currently available.

Abkhazian policy promotes the development of a robust financial system with a national bank and local banks. The Georgian embargo has impeded the efforts to modernize and expand its banking system and integrate into the global economy.

Telecommunication services are provided by both state and private companies. Abkhazia has two cell phone operators, "Aquafon-GSM" and "A-Mobile", as well as Internet service providers. The country also has two television broadcasters, the state-run Abkhaz TV Radio Company and the private Abaza-TV Channel.

Abkhazia's government is funded by customs duties; a value-added tax (VAT); and taxes on income, land and profits. Abkhazia exports about $20 million in goods per year, while importing about $120 million.
