Republic of Abkhazia

Judicial Branch

Abkhazia has established an open and independent judicial system. The Supreme Court of Abkhazia is the highest court in the land. The Chairman of the Supreme Court, as well as other high justices and judges of the lower courts, are nominated by the president and approved by the People's Assembly.

Judges are appointed to permanent, non-political terms to ensure independence and impartiality of the judicial branch.

The duties of the Supreme Court of Abkhazia include the following:

  • Rule on disputes over election results and electoral procedures;
  • Resolve any disputes and express opinions regarding constitutional issues.
  • Preside over criminal, civil and administrative cases;
  • Enforce the decisions of all courts in the Republic of Abkhazia;
  • Provide judicial instructions to all other courts.
