Legislative Branch

The People's Assembly of Abkhazia is the legislative branch of the Republic of Abkhazia. The Assembly is a one-house lawmaking body with 35 members who are elected to represent their respective districts for five-year terms.

Nugzar Ashuba is the speaker of parliament. He was elected to the People's Assembly in the 2002 elections, and he was elected speaker in 2002. Born on March 2, 1952 in the village of Guada, in the Ochamchira district, Ashuba is married with two children.

Albert Ovsepyan is the vice-speaker of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia. Born January 13, 1938 in Parnaut, he worked as a teacher for most of his career. He assumed his current position in 2006.
